What Is NVIDIA RTX Remix?

RTX Remix is NVIDIA's modding platform for remastering classic PC games.

It consists of two major components:

  • RTX Remix Runtime
  • RTX Remix Toolkit

The Runtime works alongside the original game and can replace original assets with remastered versions while rendering the game using modern RTX technology.

The Toolkit is where mod creators work with captured scenes, replace assets and materials, modify lighting and build their remaster.

RTX Remix can add technologies including path tracing, DLSS and NVIDIA Reflex.

What Games Work With RTX Remix?

RTX Remix isn't compatible with every PC game.

It is primarily designed for older DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games that use a fixed-function graphics pipeline.

Games released roughly between 2000 and 2005 are particularly good candidates, although compatibility varies from game to game.

That makes RTX Remix especially interesting for giving older PC games a dramatically different visual presentation.

Before starting a large project, check whether the game you want to modify is known to work with RTX Remix.

Best PC Setup for RTX Remix in 2026

RTX Remix is considerably more demanding than running the original games it modifies.

NVIDIA's recommended system includes:

  • Windows 11
  • Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
  • 32GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
  • 12GB VRAM
  • NVMe SSD

Those specifications provide a useful starting point, but there are several newer GPUs worth considering when building an RTX Remix PC today.

Best Value GPU: RTX 5060 Ti 16GB

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Ti

For a lower-cost RTX Remix build, I would look closely at the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB.

The important specification here is the 16GB of VRAM.

RTX Remix projects can involve high-resolution textures, replacement assets and demanding path-traced rendering, so additional graphics memory can be useful.

The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is therefore an interesting option for someone who wants to experiment with RTX Remix without immediately moving into the higher-priced RTX cards.

Check the current RTX 5060 Ti 16GB listings on Tech Finder Guy before buying because GPU prices can change considerably between sellers.

Balanced Choice: RTX 5070

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070

The GeForce RTX 5070 is another strong option for an RTX Remix workstation that will also be used as a gaming PC.

It provides considerably more GPU performance than an entry-level RTX configuration while avoiding the price of the highest-end graphics cards.

Its 12GB of VRAM also meets NVIDIA's current recommended VRAM target for RTX Remix.

For someone who wants one PC for modern gaming and RTX Remix experimentation, the RTX 5070 deserves serious consideration.

My Preferred RTX Remix GPU: RTX 5070 Ti 16GB

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

If the budget allows it, the RTX 5070 Ti 16GB is the setup I would target for a serious RTX Remix machine.

The combination of stronger GPU performance and 16GB of VRAM provides more room for demanding path-traced scenes and higher-quality assets.

This is especially useful if you intend to spend significant time creating mods rather than simply playing existing RTX Remix projects.

High-End Choice: RTX 5080 16GB

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080

For a high-end RTX Remix workstation, consider the RTX 5080.

RTX Remix path tracing can place an enormous workload on the GPU. More GPU performance gives you additional flexibility when working with demanding scenes and high graphical settings.

The RTX 5080 isn't necessary for getting started, but it makes sense for enthusiasts building a powerful PC for RTX Remix, modern gaming and GPU-heavy creative workloads.

How Much RAM Do You Need?

NVIDIA currently recommends 32GB of system RAM.

Corsair VENGEANCE RGB 32GB DDR5 6400 CL32

For most RTX Remix systems, I would therefore start with a quality 32GB DDR5 kit.

However, serious mod creators may want to consider

G.Skill 64GB DDR5 6400

64GB is particularly attractive if you frequently run RTX Remix alongside Blender, image-editing software, AI tools or other content-creation applications.

Use an NVMe SSD

Crucial P2 2TB m.2 2280 NVMe CT2000P2SSD8 SSD | 1yr Warranty, Fast Ship!

NVIDIA recommends an NVMe SSD for RTX Remix.

I'd go further and suggest using a 2TB NVMe SSD if you're building a dedicated gaming and modding machine.

RTX Remix projects can involve captures, replacement textures, meshes and other project assets. Modern games themselves also consume substantial storage.

A 2TB drive provides much more breathing room than a small boot SSD.

Good gaming SSD families to compare on Tech Finder Guy include:

  • Samsung 990 Pro
  • WD Black SN850X
  • Crucial T500
  • Lexar NM790
  • Kingston KC3000

How to Install RTX Remix

The easiest way to begin is through NVIDIA's software.

First install the NVIDIA App and make sure your NVIDIA graphics driver is current.

From the NVIDIA App, install RTX Remix.

There are two things to understand before continuing.

If you only want to PLAY an existing RTX Remix mod, you need the RTX Remix Runtime.

If you want to CREATE your own RTX Remix mods, install the RTX Remix Toolkit.

The Toolkit already includes the Runtime.

How to Set Up RTX Remix With a Game

Once you've selected a compatible game, locate the RTX Remix Runtime directory.

The Runtime contains files including:

d3d9.dll

and the:

.trex

folder.

Copy the Runtime contents into the appropriate game directory so the d3d9.dll and .trex directory are located where the game expects its DirectX 9 library.

For many games this will be next to the game's executable, although some games require a different location.

Start the game normally.

When RTX Remix successfully loads, you should see the RTX Remix welcome message.

You can then use the RTX Remix interface to configure the game.

Opening the RTX Remix Menu

Once RTX Remix is running, use:

Alt + X

to open the Remix interface.

The Game Setup section is particularly important when initially configuring a game.

Because older games render graphics differently, individual games may require different RTX Remix settings before everything displays correctly.

Capturing a Scene

After getting the Runtime working properly, move to an area of the game you want to modify.

RTX Remix can capture the game's scene and assets.

These captures become the foundation for your Remix project.

You can then open the RTX Remix Toolkit and create a project using your captured scene.

Create Your RTX Remix Project

Open the RTX Remix Toolkit and select:

New

Then use the Project Wizard to create a new project.

Your project contains the changes you're making to the original game while maintaining links to captured assets.

From here, the real remastering work begins.

Replace Old Textures and Materials

One of the biggest improvements you can make is replacing old materials.

Classic games were created for hardware that was dramatically less powerful than today's GPUs.

RTX Remix lets you create modern physically based materials and replace original game assets.

This can dramatically improve surfaces such as:

  • Brick
  • Concrete
  • Metal
  • Wood
  • Glass
  • Roads
  • Walls
  • Floors

Instead of simply increasing texture resolution, you can create materials that interact realistically with the new lighting system.

Replace 3D Assets

RTX Remix can also replace original game meshes.

For example, an old object consisting of a very simple model can be replaced with a significantly more detailed asset.

The Runtime identifies original assets and substitutes the replacement while the game is running.

This allows the game's underlying gameplay to remain intact while its presentation changes dramatically.

Relight the Game

Lighting is where RTX Remix can become especially impressive.

The original game may have been designed around simple lighting techniques from more than 20 years ago.

RTX Remix allows modders to introduce modern lighting and path-traced rendering.

Lights can cast realistic shadows, reflections and indirect illumination that were impossible on the hardware these games originally targeted.

Experimenting with lighting can completely change the atmosphere of an old game.

RTX Remix and AI

RTX Remix also provides AI-assisted workflows for enhancing game assets.

Advanced users can integrate AI tools into their workflow for tasks such as texture enhancement.

However, don't assume AI automatically creates a finished remaster.

Good results still require artistic decisions, testing and manually checking how replacement materials and assets behave inside the actual game.

Recommended RTX Remix Build

If I were putting together a dedicated RTX Remix PC in 2026, my target would look something like this:

GPU: GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB

CPU: Modern Core i7 / Ryzen 7 class processor

RAM: 32GB DDR5 minimum 64GB DDR5 preferred for heavier creation workloads

Storage: 2TB NVMe SSD

Operating System: Windows 11

This gives you a powerful modern gaming PC while providing considerably more resources for RTX Remix creation.

Budget RTX Remix Build

You don't necessarily need a high-end workstation to experiment with RTX Remix.

A more affordable setup could use:

GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 32GB DDR5 1TB or 2TB NVMe SSD Modern Core i5 / Ryzen 5 or better

You can always begin with a smaller project and upgrade later if RTX Remix becomes something you use regularly.

Should You Try RTX Remix?

If you enjoy classic PC games, graphics technology or game modding, RTX Remix is absolutely worth experimenting with.

It gives enthusiasts the ability to take games designed for much older hardware and rebuild their visual presentation using technology such as path tracing, modern materials, upgraded assets and AI-assisted workflows.

You don't have to create an entire remaster on your first attempt.

Start with one compatible game.

Get the Runtime working.

Capture a scene.

Replace a few materials.

Experiment with lighting.

Once you understand that workflow, you can gradually turn the project into something much larger.
